Here’s the story: I plan to update the Samsung Kies for my Samsung Galaxy S2 in order to be able to get the latest firmware update. My SGS2 currently uses Android Gingerbread 2.3.3 version, and after waiting for so long, and check daily for the firmware update thru Samsung Kies, I noticed that there is something wrong with my Kies because there is no firmware update notification even though it officially said that the Upgrade firmware to Android Ice Cream Sandwich for my Galaxy S2 is available.
I do have contact the Samsung supports, They told me to update via Phone FOTA (Settings > About > Update Software) but the result was null (aka no update available). Then I came for the best solution and final step: Even though it said that my Samsung Kies is the latest version (2.1.x.x.x), I noticed that it’s not actually the current / latest update. On the Samsung Kies download installer official page (available for Windows OS and Mac OS), we found the newest update for Samsung Kies 2.3.1.12044_18 version. The I decided to download and install it.
After uninstalling the older version and install the latest version of Samsung Kies, the problem appears when I try to connect my SGS2 to Computer. I’s using Windows 7 Home Edition 64 bit here. It try to install the MTP USB Device but it failed. It try to unplug the USB cable and re-plugin it again, still the Device driver software for MTP USB was not successfully installed.
Unfortunately, searching the solution on the internet is come for nothing. Some of the solution seems to be “dangerous” because it need to install “unofficial” software. Then in desperate situation, coincidentally I found the solution. It really a common solution and really a simple trick.
Here are the steps to resolve the MTP USB Device Driver failed (for Windows 7 64 bit):
- Close Samsung Kies
- Unplug the USB cable
- You need an internet connection here. Please make sure that the connection is online and in good speed
- Reconnect Samsung Galaxy S II with USB cable and don’t open the Samsung Kies. If you use external microSD card, unmount it first, remove, then insert it back.
- It would said that the MTP USB Drive failed to install but let the solution via Searching for Windows Updated Driver software via Internet (downloaded from microsoft server) and do their job
- Windows would get your driver and installed properly. Now your ready to use the Samsung Kies with your Galaxy S2
Download Samsung Kies 2.3.1.12044_18 version
Btw, you are had a trouble finding the latest version of Samsung Kies, you can directly download via this link: Samsung Kies 2.3.1.12044_18 Download (Size: 87.6MB)
Note: You can try this solution for any versions of Galaxy S: Samsung Galaxy S III, or even Samsung Galaxy S4

This does not help!
I found the solution FINALLY!!!
It took me 2 days, hells bells!
– You have to have Kies on Android and on your PC updated to the latest version!
If it still fails:
– Disconnect S2
– Switch it off
– Take the SD card out
– Put it back in
– Download the MTP USB driver from Samsung web site
– Install it
– Reboot Windows
– Plug S2 and see
It worked for me
