With flip type of form factor design, this Samsung Rugby III SGH-A997 is a mobile phone that acquired wth IP67 certified for dust tight and water proof and also got Military Standard MIL-STD-810G certified for salt, dust, rain, humidity, vibration, solar radiation, transport and thermal sock resistant.

The physical keyboard uses on Rugby 3 (open flip) is the alpha numeric keyboard. This phone remind me on old fashioned mobile phone that all the navigation and input method are coming from the its physical keyboard and buttons/keys. The 2.4 inches display doesn’t support touch input. It uses TFT display with 240 x 320 pixels resolution and has 256K colors. There is a second display locate on the back of the phone.

One of the main feature on Samsung Rugby 3 is the capability on having Enhanced Push to Talk along with AT&T Carrier (short as EPTT). With thie EPTT, you can make conversation just like you user “ordinary push to talk” but not it two-way dialog (conversation) with just 2 people, but with more than two. Even you can make a group conversation like a conference call.

FYI, the Samsung Rugby III doesn’t have Radio receiver but you can have AT&T Radio (online radio) instead. Although you must connect to the internet (data connection) in order to use it. On page 135, you can learn how to use APN Control, Change PIN2, Change Phone Password and also how to Reset the Phone (Factory Reset/Hard Reset/ Master Reset). We resume it in quick steps: Go to Menu > Settings > Phone > Reset Phone > All Settings reset to factory defaults. Continue? > Yes > Confirm with your password > Reset Phone Don.

The Operating System is proprietary OS by Samsung (Java OS, I thought). The Processor mentioned that this Samsung Rugby III is attached with 468 MHz processor with 128MB RAM. There is microSD external slot memory for up to 32GB. This availability is good one due to the internal built-in memory on this SGH-A997 only uses 256MB.

Don’t expect the features that usually embedded on Smartphone devices. This Rugby III seems on the usage for basic mobile phone function: Text Message with SMS, MMS, Calling, and basic photography shot. That’s why even the phone supports for GSM 3G HSDPA and HSUPA but there is no Wi-Fi connection (WLAN) available on this phone. Still you get basic wireless connection via Bluetooth v2.1 or using cable via USB with microUSB v2.0

The device is assembled with removable Li-ion type battery with 1300 mAh capacity. This battery is claimed on having talk-time duration for about 9 hours. Along with the battery, the flip phone weights 133 grams (4.69 ounces) an has 104.1 x 53.3 x 20.3 millimeter dimension size.

For the camera, this phone is attached with one camera on the rear casing. It’s 3 megapixel camera (some source said has 3.15MP camera) without LED Flash but has geo-tagging feature. It’s can be used to record basic Video. GPS that can be used for geo-tagging means that you can get navigation with this Rugby 3.
